The Indian National Society of Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering was established in 1948. In 1970, the name Indian Geotechnical Society (IGS) was adopted. The first chapter in Kerala was formed in the year 2009. To promote closer interaction amongst geotechnical engineers spread all over the country, local chapters of the Society were introduced in 1968. Student chapters provide an opportunity for Bachelor Degree students of 2nd, 3rd, and 4th year in Civil Engineering and Master's Degree students of the Geotechnical Engineering program. Activities such as seminars, workshops, and lectures conducted by student chapters under the guidance of faculty coordinators from institutions and members of local chapters significantly help the student community.

IGS Student Chapter St. Thomas Institute of Science and Technology was started in March 2018 with the strength of 60 student members. It was inaugurated by Prof. G. V. Rao, Former Head of Civil Engineering Dept, IIT Delhi & Secretary of Indian Geotechnical Journal, on March 15, 2018. IGS is intended to promote the development of organizational skills, communication abilities, and technical knowledge through field visits, talks, and linking with IGS consultancy works.
